MY STORY

GREETINGS, friends and fellow creatives!

I write both poetry and prose. Two of my poetry chapbooks have been published by Finishing Line Press. Another, which includes my poetry paired with my photographs, was published by Horse & Buggy Press.  (All are available here on my website.).

I’ve been fortunate to twice be a Sundress Academy for the Arts poetry winner, and a Tupelo Press 30/30 “poet runner” (a poem a day for 30 days). My poetry has been included in collected works, such as “200 New Mexico Poems”.

My other creative interests include writing songs, and doing photography and documentary film. Currently, I’m working on a memoir about the first 13 years of my life, and looking forward to writing poetry for children’s books (hoping to team with a great illustrator, of course!).

I’ve always been interested in the relationship between people and landscape. This led me to pursue a degree in geography, focused on cultural and medical geography, which led to a Ph.D. from the University of NC - Chapel Hill. If you think of “geography” in the broadest sense, as the spatial relationship of one person or thing to any other thing, the potential for learning, writing about, and enjoying our amazing world is just about endless.

I do have a day job: I’ve been fortunate to work many years for SAS (software). This results in another area of interest for me: the intersection of art and science. I walk with a foot in both worlds, which has both challenges and rewards.

By now you’ve probably figured out I’ve been around for a pretty good while. Which leads me to something else: the value of wisdom drawn from experience in our world. So many cultures honor those who achieve elder status, while sadly, some (like mine) tend not to. (Not that I’ve reached “elder status” yet; my friends can vouch for my complete lack of wisdom on many occasions.)

That said, I will enjoy learning and giving back in writing for as long as I can, celebrating each day with some creative adventure. I hope each of you celebrate your creativity every day as well.

Thanks again for visiting!
